Making great art is never easy. Making it in perfect harmony might just be impossible. When one member of an esteemed string quartet is fired days before the most important performance of their career, the others must quickly find a replacement. Personalities clash, tensions rise, and the musicians grapple with how far they will go to achieve excellence. This play—about the shockingly difficult dynamics of a string quartet—has been called "vibrant", "astounding", and "truly remarkable." It is a passionate, smart, funny and moving story that resonates with the creative artist in all of us.
Mr. Hollinger is the author of Red Herring,Incorruptible, An Empty Plate in the Cafe du Grand Boeuf, and Tiny Island, all of which premiered at Philadelphia’s Arden Theatre Company and have together enjoyed productions around the country, off-Broadway, and abroad. These plays are all published by Dramatists Play Service. Tiny Island also appears in New Playwrights: Best Plays of 1999, published by Smith and Kraus. His latest play, Tooth and Claw, was commissioned by the Ensemble Studio Theatre/Alfred P. Sloan Science and Technology Project, and received its world and New York premieres in the spring of 2004 at the Arden and EST, respectively. Michael has written seven touring plays for young audiences, as well as the 3D Laser Show Extreme Choices for New Jersey’s Liberty Science Center. Matthew’s work has been seen at PlayMakers Repertory Company, Chautauqua Theater Company, Shakespeare Festival St. Louis, The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey, Two River Theater Company, New Jersey Repertory, 78th Street Theatre Lab, Ohio Theater, Washington Ensemble Theater, Portland Stage Company, Hangar Theatre, Theatre at Monmouth, and the Penobscot Theatre Company among others. Matthew served as resident dramaturg and literary manager of Portland Stage Company from 1992 to 1998. He is a member of the First Look Theatre Company at NYU, an Associate Artist of the Washington Ensemble Theater, a Usual Suspect of New York Theatre Workshop, and Drama League Directing Fellow. Ms. Sorenson is currently the costume shop supervisor for Two River Theater. Previous work includes: costume designs for Wrecks, My Name is Rachel Corrie, and Fifty Words at the Contemporary American Theater Festival, where she was also the costume shop manager for three seasons. Lesley also assisted Ann Hould-Ward for Anna Deavere-Smith’s Let Me Down Easy (world premiere) at Long Wharf Theatre. One of inspirations for Opus was High Fidelity: The Adventures of the Guarneri String Quartet, a documentary about one of the most famous and long-lasting string quartets: the Guarneri quartet.
